Surgical Research Protocol Workshop: Pioneering Innovation and Comprehensive Measurement in Southern Tagalog

On April 9, 2025, 101 Health Research, in partnership with the Philippine College of Surgeons Southern Tagalog Chapter, successfully hosted a Surgical Research Protocol Workshop at Mary Mediatrix Medical Center in Lipa, Batangas. This initiative, led by Dr. Michael Dela Paz, Research Committee Head of PCS STC, gathered surgical residents from seven key hospitals:

    • Batangas Medical Center

    • Perpetual Los Baños University Hospital

    • De La Salle University Medical Center

    • Southern Tagalog Medical Center

    • Mary Mediatrix Medical Center

    • General Emilio Aguinaldo Medical Center

    • Quezon Memorial Hospital

During the workshop, participants developed a Capsule Protocol for a Multi-Center Study on Estimating the Surgical Burden of Disease in Southern Tagalog. The study’s design integrates comprehensive frameworks from low-income countries (LIC), high-income countries (HIC), and global benchmarks from Lancet/WHO. This hybrid approach is particularly relevant to the Philippines, which faces a “double burden” of care—managing challenges common to both resource-limited and advanced healthcare settings. Dr. Venus Oliva Cloma-Rosales, known as Doc Ivy, highlighted that adopting both LIC and HIC indicators provides an accurate reflection of our unique local context.

In addition, the workshop addressed Surgical Innovation Research with a focused session on the IDEAL Framework for the Stages of Surgical Innovation (more information can be found at IDEAL Collaboration). This globally recognized framework supports the systematic development and evaluation of surgical innovations.

This event marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance research quality, promote surgical innovation, and ultimately improve patient outcomes in the Southern Tagalog region. For further details on our initiatives and upcoming events, please like facebook.com/101HealthResearch.
