In research, terms we use every day—sepsis, improvement, control, response—don’t mean anything unless they are operationally defined.
👉 An operational definition explains exactly how a concept is identified, measured, or classified in your study.
It answers:
- What criteria were used?
- What thresholds applied?
- Who assessed it—and when?
Operational definitions may:
- ✔ Follow global or clinical standards
- ✔ Be adapted to the study context
- ✔ Be author-defined, when no standard exists
What matters is not perfection—it’s clarity, consistency, and justification.
