Evidence-Based Research: Essential Tips for Writing Methods Section

Manila, Philippines — 101 Health Research joined the Department of Health – Tondo Medical Center (TMC), Department of Dermatology and Venereology, for its research learning session “Designing Evidence That Matters: Study Designs, Sampling Strategies, and Research Priorities.”

As part of the program, Dr. Venus Oliva Cloma-Rosales (Doc Ivy)—Founder and Managing Director of 101 Health Research—delivered the session “Designing and Writing the Methods Section: A Practical Framework.”

In her talk, Dr. Cloma-Rosales emphasized that the Methods section does more than describe procedures—it defines how the study is done and whether it can be trusted.

She highlighted how well-written Methods support reproducibility, guide ethical and feasibility assessment, and strengthen alignment between the research question and the study’s implementation.

Participants were guided through a practical structure for writing the Methods section from a protocol perspective, covering key components such as:

  • Study design and setting
  • Study population and recruitment
  • Interventions/exposures and outcomes
  • Data collection
  • Statistical analysis planning

The session also reinforced the importance of starting with a clear research question framework—such as PICO/PECO, PIRT, and SPICE—to prevent common pitfalls like mismatched populations and poorly defined outcomes.

To support practical protocol development, Dr. Cloma-Rosales discussed core reviewer expectations, including clear sampling frames, justified eligibility criteria, and transparent statistical planning. The session also introduced how AI tools can be used appropriately for drafting support—while ensuring that researchers remain accountable for methodological rigor and ethical judgment.

101 Health Research thanks DOH–Tondo Medical Center for the opportunity to contribute to strengthening clinical research capacity and advancing evidence that matters for patient care and public health.
