Aligning Strategy and Science: PCHTM and 101 Health Research Collaborate to Shape Research Direction

July 19, 2025 • The B Hotel, Quezon City — In a bold step toward strengthening its research program, the Philippine College of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine (PCHTM) partnered with 101 Health Research to conduct its 2025 Research Agenda Setting Workshop—an intensive, collaborative exercise that emphasized alignment, prioritization, and actionability.

The event marked a milestone in how specialty societies like PCHTM are shaping their research goals with strategic foresight and systems thinking. With over a decade of experience in research strategy, evidence generation, and health systems advising, 101 Health Research designed and facilitated the full-day workshop using an adaptive, participatory framework.

A Process Grounded in Purpose

The workshop was structured to support PCHTM in clarifying its research priorities based on its mission to improve adult hematologic care in the Philippines. Through a phased methodology, participants moved from idea generation to consensus-building, using evidence-based tools to guide decision-making. Key steps included:

  • Reviewing alignment with PCHTM’s vision, global health trends, and the national research landscape

  • Surfacing themes from past data and member inputs

  • Applying structured prioritization, including a “Value vs. Effort” matrix that enabled transparent discussion of feasibility and impact

  • Reaching consensus on what constitutes actionable, high-priority research directions for the College

101 Health Research played a facilitative and technical role throughout the process—translating open-ended ideas into structured categories, guiding thematic analysis, and moderating group discussions to balance ambition with practicality.

From Framework to Forward Motion

What made the workshop stand out was not just the outputs, but the process itself: rigorous, inclusive, and future-focused. The session encouraged dialogue between early-career researchers, senior fellows, and members of the PCHTM research committee, while also fostering shared ownership of next steps.

The scoring and consensus tools introduced by 101 Health Research—such as impact-weighted ranking and project classification models—helped the group visualize trade-offs and potential timelines, ensuring that the final research roadmap would be both visionary and grounded in reality.

A Model for Institutional Agenda Setting

By leveraging expert facilitation and evidence-informed methods, the partnership between PCHTM and 101 Health Research offers a blueprint for other professional societies seeking to evolve their research ecosystems. It reinforces the idea that agenda setting isn’t just about choosing topics—it’s about shaping a shared understanding of where the organization wants to go, and how research can help get it there.

As PCHTM moves forward with its 2025–2030 research initiatives, the foundation laid during this workshop ensures that its projects are mission-aligned, strategically prioritized, and ready for implementation.
