HERDIN is AI-Ready: 101 Health Research Launches Revolutionary AI Tool to Transform Philippine Health Data

October 8, 2024, Makati City101 Health Research has unveiled an advanced artificial intelligence tool that promises to redefine the way health research data is managed. With the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and its Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), 101 Health Research presented this innovation to stakeholders from representative health institutions across the Philippines. This AI-driven project, designed to streamline HERDIN’s document encoding, holds the potential to set new standards in health data accessibility and operational efficiency.

The project, “Design and Development of an Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering Process Innovation to Automate Encoding Document Features,” aims to revolutionize the encoding process for the HERDIN database. By automating the extraction of data from scanned documents, this solution developed by 101 Health Research promises faster, more accurate, and cost-effective access to Philippine health research—a transformation set to benefit researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers nationwide.

A Milestone for Philippine Health Data: The Role of 101 Health Research

HERDIN (Health Research and Development Information Network) is the national health research database, but much of its data has historically been locked in paper documents, limiting accessibility and usability. Recognizing this need, 101 Health Research—a leading force in data engineering and health research innovation—took the initiative to design an AI system that could digitize HERDIN’s content more efficiently than ever before. By developing an automated encoding tool, 101 Health Research has bridged the gap between traditional archives and the digital future of Philippine health data.

The Final Presentation: 101 Health Research’s AI Tool

Held at Clock-in Ayala North Exchange in Makati, the Final Presentation of the project brought together esteemed representatives from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University – School of Medicine, Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Cebu Doctors’ University, Far Eastern University – NRMF, Our Lady of Fatima University, Northern Mindanao Medical Center, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, and Trinity University of Asia. The event was a comprehensive demonstration of 101 Health Research’s commitment to pioneering AI solutions that support and streamline health research.

The program opened with remarks from Dr. Venus Oliva Cloma-Rosales MD MPH ME, the Founder and Managing Director of 101 Health Research and lead of this project. She introduced 101 Health Research and spoke on  the importance of harnessing AI for data transformation, setting the stage for the detailed presentation that followed. After Dr. Cloma-Rosales’ remarks, Mr. Aian Rosales MSc, Chief Operating Officer and Data Scientist at 101 Health Research, provided an accessible lecture on artificial intelligence, giving stakeholders a glimpse into how this technology would reshape HERDIN’s data management.

Mr. Shehab Ibrahim MSc MIT, a 101 Health Research Data Scientist and Programmer, then conducted an interactive demonstration of the AI tool, highlighting its capabilities to automatically encode document features from scanned files and efficiently prepare them for uploading to HERDIN’s database. Stakeholders participated in hands-on training, testing the tool and providing feedback that will shape its future development.

The AI-Driven Advantage: 101 Health Research Leads the Way

The innovation showcased at this event is a testament to 101 Health Research’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of data management technology. Manually encoding research papers into HERDIN is a labor-intensive, error-prone task, one that can take hours per document. The AI solution developed by 101 Health Research automates this process, turning hours into seconds while maintaining accuracy and consistency.

By developing a tool that drastically reduces the manual workload, 101 Health Research is not only advancing HERDIN’s mission but also setting a benchmark for future data engineering efforts in the Philippines. This project proves the power of AI to optimize health data management, making health information more readily accessible to those who need it most.

Beyond HERDIN: 101 Health Research’s Vision for the Future of AI

While developed for HERDIN, 101 Health Research’s AI system has broad applications that extend beyond health research data. This technology can be adapted to manage large volumes of data across sectors, from legal records to historical archives, unlocking transformative potential in public and private information systems. As more institutions embrace digital transformation, the impact of this technology will only grow, solidifying 101 Health Research’s role as a leader in data engineering solutions in the Philippines.

The completion of this AI project lays the groundwork for future collaborations, with 101 Health Research at the helm of AI development for the public good. The system offers possibilities for data analysis, predictive modeling, and even diagnostic support in healthcare. By making Philippine health research more accessible, 101 Health Research and DOST-PCHRD are advancing a vision of data-driven healthcare that can support critical decision-making in public health and beyond.

Continuing the Legacy of Innovation

In her closing remarks, Ms. Maria Violeta Intia of DOST-PCHRD, who supervises HERDIN, acknowledged 101 Health Research’s dedication and foresight in developing this tool. She highlighted the importance of the collaboration that made this project possible and emphasized that the tool represents the beginning of ongoing advancements in health research data management. DOST-PCHRD funded this AI innovation project.

Following the event, attendees visited 101 Health Research’s office at Medical Plaza Makati, where they engaged in further discussion and provided valuable feedback that will guide the next phase of development for this innovative system. •
